SHORT COURSES

BSA offers a selection of short courses ranging from six to eight weeks, on a diverse range of visual arts subjects and mediums, with experienced teachers who are nationally-recognised practicing artists. 

The BSA Year of Painting is designed for students to develop their practice using a variety of approaches. Dale Rhodes will lead Fundamentals of Painting in Term 1 and Still Life in Term 2. James Guppy will lead Portraiture in Term 3 followed by Caleb Reid with Abstraction in Term 4.

Our BSA Year of Ceramics will held again on Tuesdays, 10am – 3pm, with Stephen Bird running his six-week course, Clay as a Canvas in Term 1. Antoinette O’Brien will be working with The Figure in Clay during Term 2. Kat Shapiro Wood will lead Ceramic Sculpture in Term 3 and Jenny Gill Schirmer will introduce students to clay in Term 4.

These series of short courses are designed to offer a more immersive, continuous course to develop and improve your painting or sculpting skills.

All classes are held at 112 Dalley Street, MULLUMBIMBY unless otherwise noted.

DALE RHODES | STILL LIFE

This course will introduce students to all aspects of still life painting. Dale will support students to explore materials, surfaces and grounds, tonal relationships, colour and colour mixing and encouraged to develop their own style and approach. MORE INFO

STEPHEN BIRD | INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS

This six-week course is designed for those students with some previous ceramic experience and who wish to expand and develop their hand building skills and hone their painting and glazing techniques. Stephen will support students to explore a variety of glazing techniques, including liquid clay slip, under glaze, metal oxides, tin glazed earthenware, on glaze enamels and luster. MORE INFO

ANTOINETTE O’BRIEN | THE FIGURE IN CLAY

In this seven-week course, students will develop a bust on a sculpture plinth focusing on surface development. Techniques covered will include building from a pattern with slabs and modelling. Antoinette will demonstrate her unique techniques that she employs in the process of her practice

AMBER WALLIS | OIL PAINTING

During this six-week course Amber will introduce students to various oil painting techniques. Students will explore varying types of abstraction and representation painting and investigate ways to navigate essential parts of painting including composition, colour and scale. 

Amber will guide students and support them to find their individual visual language related to their own interests.

MICHAEL CUSACK | PAINTING USING MIXED MEDIA

During this six-week course Michael will support students to explore a variety of painting processes with a focus on mixed media and experimentation.
Using a range of painting techniques, and thinking about composition, mark-making and materiality, students will begin to work in a series and be guided through working from small format to large scale compositions.

This course is suitable for students who have completed some visual arts study. MORE INFO

INDIVIDUAL ONLINE OR IN-PERSON MENTORING

In a series of four weekly one-hour sessions either via Zoom or in-person, students will be guided through a discussion on their art practice and their approach to art making. Mentoring will be designed to suit individual needs and discussions may focus on topics such as motivation, idea generation, techniques, approach to materials, research, writing artist statements and professional practice.
