BSA Visual Arts Foundation (FYVA) is our first year course designed to provide an extensive grounding in the Visual Arts. This is a structured studio program incorporating expanded approaches to disciplines including - but not limited to - drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D studies, installation practice, digital media, design principles, colour theory, art history and critical thinking. The course is designed to help you acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to form an integrated understanding of contemporary ideas and practices. This foundational course offers an introduction to research methodologies for those wishing to continue with Visual Arts Practice (VAP) and Visual Arts Research & Portfolio (VARP) courses. The FYVA course is suitable for those just starting out, as well as for more experienced artists looking to develop their skills and knowledge of artistic practice in a supportive, hands-on and critical environment. Our teaching method is focused on the delivery of quality education attuned to the needs of the individual student.

Our flexible course structures make it possible to work with each student in a way that is specific to individual requirements and artistic development. All our teachers are experienced educators who are nationally recognised, exhibiting arts practitioners. In line with our Artists Teaching Artists model of education, we incorporate a range of learning activities both within and beyond the studio environment to include field trips, gallery visits, guest lecturers and professional exhibition practice.

Eligibility: Intake for this preliminary course does not require previous experience, however examples of artistic ability and evident interest in visual art can be beneficial during our intake process.

Pathways: Students who successfully complete our first year Visual Arts Foundation (FYVA) course year are then eligible to apply for our second year Visual Arts Practice (VAP) course.

Application: To apply for our Visual Arts Foundation (FYVA) course please complete the Application Form at the bottom of this page and submit it by 25 November. All information and details within this form will be treated confidentially.  BSA staff will contact you to arrange a time to meet to discuss your application and to answer any questions you may have about the course. There will be a second round of application subject to available places - please submit by 27 January.

Enrolment: Once an offer into the course has been made and accepted, students must sign up for the whole year to secure their place in the course. The total fees for our foundational first year course are $6,200 (incl. GST). We offer a reduced fee of $5,990 (incl. GST) for those students who pay in full before 7 February 2025.
