STEPHEN BIRD | CLAY AS A CANVAS

In this two-day workshop students will explore the potential of making unique slab built forms and experiment with a variety of surface treatments which will then be glazed.

On day one, Stephen will guide students through all the procedures to make durable clay slabs and how to transform these slabs into simple, elegant forms. Slabs can be used to make plates, platters, vessels, tiles and unique moulds. Students will make a variety of forms on day one.

On the second day, Stephen will reveal the secrets of clay slip: how to make it, how to colour it and how to paint with it. Students will explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques using liquid clay slips, stains, metal oxides and raw glaze.
