Matthew E. Baird I The Art of Listening
Developing your ears and the art of listening for a deeper creative experience.
Quite often as visual artists we focus on the viewing aspect when it comes to our subject of choice, for example, representations of a landscape, a portrait, a still object or a photograph. We develop skills of visual observation, really looking at or into something. A lesser-used skill in art making is using our ears or mind's eye to examine a subject.
'The Art of Listening' will be delivered in two parts:
Part 1. Music - We will utilise the power of listening. Through the act of drawing, painting and mark-making you will respond directly to a piece of Avante-Garde music. There are thousands of visual cues in a complex musical composition that can equally inspire, just as a physical subject does.
Part 2. Text - Again we will utilise the power of listening. Through the act of drawing, painting and mark-making you will respond directly to a written piece. Again, there are thousands of visual cues and many different interpretations that can be obtained form a piece of text.
We will also cover some basic mark-making skills, explore appropriate materials and mediums.
No prior artistic skills required, just functioning ears and an open mind.
Workshop will be held at Shop 4/10 Station St, Bangalow.
