Matthew Baird | My Life In A Box
My Life in a Box, art as mixed media assemblage. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise (Box in a Valise) 1935 -1940.
Imagine if you had to represent or express your life or a period from your life as an assemblage of mixed media pieces in a small box. What would it contain? How would you compile, construct and organise it?
Marcel Duchamp described his Box in a Valise as a "portable museum" that would allow him to carry around his life's work in a travelling box.
Students should bring a range of acrylic paints, brushes, inks, pencils, charcoal, pencils, pastels, sandpaper, balsa wood, blades, glue, heavy duty drawing paper and or card that can handle mixed media. You may also need to gather (but not required for week one) small objects, pictures, fabrics, ornaments, cards, letters or the like that are in some way meaningful to you and perhaps represent aspects of your life.
