Kat Shapiro Wood | Ceramic Sculpture

In this eight-week course students will be exposed to the vast potential of clay as a sculptural medium within a contemporary ceramic context. They will learn the various techniques of hand-building, including pinching, coiling, slab-building and modelling to develop sculptural objects, while gaining a foundation in the technical knowledge essential to the ceramic process.

Kat will guide students through conceptual development and the exploration of visual language in form and surface, utilising earthenware and Raku clay bodies, as well as decorative possibilities of slips and underglazes or alternate colour/surface considerations.

Press moulding will also be introduced as a process to those interested; that is, creating a plaster mould, opening up possibilities of repetition, larger forms and interesting surface variations.

No prior ceramics experience necessary.

Materials provided, with the option to source individually throughout the course. There will be a base materials fee of $50 per student, and a firing fee of $12/kg post firing.
