CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

Black Diamond Money is a group exhibition curated by Michael Cusack, featuring artists associated with Newcastle: Michael Bell, Dallas Bray, Michelle Brodie, Lottie Consalvo, James Drinkwater, Stephen Garrett, Chris Langlois, Claire Martin, Izabela Pluta, Niomi Sands, Lezlie Tilley, John Turier, and Cherie Winter.

The title for this exhibition came from writer, researcher, and poet David Murray, who writes in The Passenger, ‘Today’s monotone suburbs started as a scattering of subterranean-coal-seamed villages stitched together by train lines terminating at the harbour. A new age of coal barons, workers unions sponsored Christian Churches and laid claim to "community" and the stone justification to fight battles of faith and social justice in the Sydney decreed gothic style. Hopes barely extended beyond humble spires, chimneys, finials, parapets and gables. Black diamond money and building height restrictions declared Newcastle a City’.

Worlds Full of Secrets or Welten Voller Gehaimnisse, an exhibition by local artist Sabine Pick, is currently showing on the Trinda Wall at the BSA Project space.

Enquiries for works can be made to projectspace@byronschoolofart or 0431 034 892.

Worlds Full of Secrets or Welten Voller Gehaimnisse, an exhibition by local artist Sabine Pick, is currently showing on the Trinda Wall at the BSA Project space.

Sabine Pick is an Australian artist based in Byron Bay. Her career as a graphic designer has played an integral role in her use of collage and mixed media. With this background in typography, she gradually developed a vocabulary of wooden letterpress forms and found materials — old art books, and print materials. Pick is fascinated by the patina and worn, old colours of archival and discarded papers. Through her delicately balanced compositions, Pick seeks to create new stories and conversations in this intuitive process of collage. Pick writes ‘‘Worlds full of secrets’ evolved when I started to notice the relationship between that which we can see and reveal to others and that which we keep to ourselves. With the use of fragmented shapes, each piece transitions the once readable letter, picture or written word into unreadable and hidden forms….The fragmented shapes are like conversations. They are part of words, they are part thoughts, part inner dialogues.’
