Caleb Reid | Exploring the Figure: Expressive Painting with a Life Model

Over this six-week evening course, Caleb will guide students through ways of translating the human figure into paint, using shape, tone, texture, and colour to create works that move beyond straightforward representation.

Beginning with direct studies from the life model, students will experiment with how the figure can be reimagined, stylised, or abstracted while still retaining a sense of presence and identity.

With Caleb’s support students can expand this further into more expressive and experimental territory and examine what makes a compelling figure-based painting that does not rely on strict likeness—an arena where gesture, atmosphere, emotion, and personal response to the model take precedence over representational accuracy.

Throughout the course, students will be supported to develop their own visual language in a supportive environment that encourages personal growth, critical thinking, and confident engagement with the life model.
