This year the Lismore Regional Gallery is holding their Hurford Hardwood Portrait Prize (previously the Northern Rivers Portrait Prize) and as part of BSA's commitment to the local arts community we will present a Portrait Painting course with renowned artist Rene Bolten.

In 2013 Rene won the Lismore Northern Rivers Portrait Prize with his moving painting of local disability advocate Jenny London.

Rene has been painting portraits for over 30 years and his works not only beautifully describe the faces of his subjects but also reveal layers of unique personal stories. In this course Rene will explore 3 stages (the face, the portrait and the person) of portraiture and support you to develop a rounder portrait painting practice.

Sam Sosnowski | Japanese Woodblock Printing

Artist Sam Sosnowski visited Japan in 2012 and studied Japanese woodblock techniques and hand printing with Richard Steiner in Kyoto. He has since taught and also participated in print workshops around the country to foster his own professional development.

During this introductory weekend workshop Sam will teach students how to create their own one colour woodblock prints, also covering basic design concepts, transfer of your concept onto the block, woodblock cutting, and printing with a Japanese baren.

This workshop is suitable for all levels from the beginner to the more experienced artist.
